Intuition and experimentation are integral parts of my artistic process. For me, creation is a highly unpredictable process; I like to let myself be guided by the process and play with the unexpected. This approach allows me to explore the material technically and discover the infinite possibilities that clay offers. The Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi captivates me; it encourages letting go, embracing surprise, and discovering beauty in imperfections. Formal and historical research on certain objects drives me to understand what moves me as an artist.
Red clay, layered glazes, and organic materials are at the heart of my ceramic practice. I primarily use reduction firing
in a gas kiln to capture the surprises and variations brought about by the transformation of fire. I draw inspiration from Japanese ceramicists, wood and salt firings, rocky cliffs, and rickety structures. Awe, vulnerability, and humility are
emotions that transcend my artistic exploration.
The learning derived from sensory contact with the material guides my gestures and shapes new concepts to explore. A search for balance and imbalance, the mastery of a manufacturing technique and the act of letting go fuel my aesthetic.
