I've been a make-up artist for over thirty years and had been teaching this discipline for several years when the pandemic started. Since I found it complicated to teach make-up online, I decided to start another artistic discipline that would be easier to do, alone in my studio. Since I bake gingerbread cookies every Christmas, and they're a big hit around me, I thought I'd give it a try! After much thought, it seemed difficile to make such a product profitable so I preferred to make fake cookies that would serve as decorations. That's what first led me to pottery... I did some tests in clay but the result was too perfect to be realistic. So I continued my research and finally realized that simple salt dough gave much more convincing results.
On the other hand, I was hooked on the art of pottery and enrolled in courses first in throwing and then in shaping, which I actually prefer!
For a little over two years now, I've been making different utilitarian pieces in semi-sandstone or porcelain using precisely the plate shaping technique. However, I still make fake cookies in salt dough, and their colorful, playful facture still inspires me for my ceramic pieces.
I like to contrast the rustic, organic shapes that shaping allows me to create with the graphic side of my glazes. I try to avoid my pieces being too “perfect” in shape, which is why I prefer shaping, which allows me to leave a human imprint. To give my creations a modern touch, I decorate them with geometric glaze motifs.
