Mallory Bréau

My work with clay stems from a desire to be in direct contact with the material, to shape it and give it form, sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract. This contact with matter informs my work, and meaning is created in action. Play and childhood are aspects that are naturally implied in my creations. I like to leave fingerprints in my modelled pieces, as this makes each work unique and reinforces the idea of childhood, with an almost play-dough-like aspect. I enjoy making colorful, textured pieces just as much as those in bare clay or in more sober hues. I'm more interested in creating decorative and sculptural pieces, which can also have a utilitarian aspect. Very often, these objects take on abstract forms. I start modelling with a small idea of the result, but the result is often very different from what I had imagined. The piece is created in the moment.

In my more figurative creations, the appearance of the body is a subject that inspires me and that I feel the need to explore and share. It's essential to deal with subjects that speak to me and animate me, but which can also arouse a sensation, an attraction or a questioning in the viewer.I like the objects presented to be clear on the whole, so that the viewer understands the subject, but that there is still a slight hesitation, allowing him to make his own interpretation.
