Trevor Smith, the creator behind Gatinho Ceramica, is a ceramic artist who currently lives and works in Montreal. His work explores the intersection of historical tradition and contemporary design. Specializing in tea sets and functional tableware, he uses the wheel to shape porcelain, creating pieces that derive their beauty from precision and intentionality. His aesthetic is deeply influenced by the color palette of Lawren Harris’s winter landscapes and the decoration of historic Delftware. To bridge these influences, he uses the technique of nériage. By layering and marbling colored porcelain, he strives to capture the essence of winter light on snow as a decorative element. For him, it is essential that this ornamentation remain on the surface. He believes that a vessel should never compete with its contents; the interior is clean and minimalist to allow for the full appreciation of the tea or food served within. Due to the organic nature of the marbling process, each piece is truly unique. Through this work, he seeks to elevate the daily ritual, inviting a moment of reflection and serenity to find poetry in the objects we use every day.
